Directives for Exchange Students and their Host Family

The Exchange Student’s primary responsibility is to learn to be fluent in English. Activities that encourage this growth are highly recommended. Activities that inhibit this are discouraged, and you should seek the assistance of the classroom teacher and Deacon Banks. Exchange Students should become an integral part of St. Thomas More Host family and the school community.

DIrectivas para los Estudiantes que Vienen de Otros Paises y su Familia Huesped

La responsibilidad principal del estudiante que viene del otro pais (“estudiantes” de aqui en adelante en este documento) es aprender a tener fluidez en el Ingles.  Las actividades que animan este crecimiento son recomendados sumamente.  Las actividades que impiden esto son desanimados, y usted debe buscar la ayuda del maestro de su clase y el Diacono Banks.El estudiante debe de llegar a ser una parte integral de la familia huesped y de la comunididad de la escuela de Santo Tomas More.

Family Vacations

Once the Exchange family and the Host family have been paired together, it is important that one of the first discussion be whether or not the Host family or the Exchange Student family have any family vacations planned, and how you and/or they want to handle those times. If Exchange Students are to be included in Host family vacations that have been planned far in advance, then it is up to the Exchange Student and his/her family to accept the invitation. If they accept the invitation, the cost of the trip is to be considered and the Exchange Student should pay for his/her portion of this trip. If they choose not to attend, or it is not feasible because of reservations for the Exchange Student to attend this family vacation, then arrangements will be made for the Exchange Student to stay with another member of the school community while this vacation is taking place.

 Vacaciones Familiares

Una vez que la familia del estudiante  y la familia huesped se han pareadas, es importante que una de las primeras conversaciones debe de ser si la famila huesped o la familia del estudiante tiene planes para vacaciones familiares, y como ustedes y/o ellos quieren manejar estos tiempos.  Si el estudiante va a ser incluido en las vacaciones de la familia huesped que han sido planeadas muy anticipadamente, entonces es la responsabilidad del estudiante y su familia de aceptar la invitacion.  Si aceptan la invitacion, el costo de las vacaciones tienen que ser considerado, y el estudiante debe de pagar su parte del costo del viaje.  Si escoge a no aceptar la invitacion, o no es posible que el estudiante lo haga por cuestiones de reservaciones, etc., entonces hay que hacer arreglos a fin de que el estudiante pueda quedarse con otro miembro de la comunidad escolar durante el tiempo de las vacaciones de la familia huesped..

Food Costs

The normal food cost is included in the stated Room and Board rate of $800.00/month [this is a set fee between the Host and Exchange Student family; any change to this amount should be approved by school prior to admittance].  Host families may not charge more than this amount unless they have discussed this with Deacon Banks, and have adequate reasons for requesting additional funds.  If the family is going out to dinner, then this is part of the Room and Board. If the Exchange Student chooses to go out to dinner with a different family, or to the movies or other such entertainment as part of their own social invitations [not those of the family] then these costs are borne by the Exchange Student and his/her personal funds.

 El Costo de la Comida

El costo normal de la comida es incluido en en el precio fijo para el cuarto y comida de $800.00/mes.  (Este es un precio fijo entre la familia huesped y la familia del estudiante;  cualquier cambio a esta cantidad debe de ser aprobado por la escuela antes de admitir al estudiante en la escuela).  La familia huesped no puede pedir mas de esta cantidad a menos que lo han discutido con el Diacono Banks and tienen razones adecuadas para hacerlo.  Si la familia esta saliendo de la casa para comer, entonces es parte del Cuarto y Comida.  Si el estudiante escoge a ir a comer afuera de la cas con otra familia, o a una pelicula u otro entretenimiento como parte de sus propias invitaciones (no las de la familia huesped), entonces estos gastos pertenecen al estudiante, de sus propios recursos.

Chores

American children often have to do chores or jobs around the home. The Exchange Student is expected to take his/her place in the family and follow the norms of the family.

Quehaceres

Los ninos estadounidenses muchas veces tienen que hacer quehaceres o tareas en la casa. La expectativa es que el estudiante toma su lugar en la familia huesped y sigue las costumbres de la familia con respecto a esto.

 Communications in Spanish

Exchange Students may have their own cell phone or other devices that connect to internet, but they are to be in the possession of the host family and only used on a limited basis to contact home or friends at home. Communication with home or with other friends is highly discouraged, especially in the first two months.  Boundaries are required that establish and encourage the student to speak English. Exchange families are spending valuable money to have the student experience the American culture and speak English– any time they speak in their native language it is detrimental to learning the language fluently.  We know it is sometimes a hard adjustment, but 30 years of experience has shown us that the more they are forced to speak in English and not their own language, especially when they first arrive, the easier the transition.  Once two months have passed, depending on the Exchange Student’s involvement and communication, these restrictions can be re-evaluated.

Las Comunicaciones en Espanol

El estudiante puede tener su propio telefono celular u otros modos de comunicacion electronico que conectan al Internet, pero estos tienen que ser en la posesion de la familia huesped e usados solamente cuando sea necesario para comunicarse con su familia o amigos en su pais.  La comunicacion con la familia u otros amigos es sumamente desanimado, especialmente durante los primeros dos meses.  Se requieren los limites que establecen y animan al estudiante a hablar el ingles.  Las famllias de otros paises estando gastando mucho dinero valioso para que el estudiante experimente la cultura Americana y aprenda mejor el ingles- cualquier tiempo en que hable en su lengua nativo se disminuye su experiencia y su aprendizaje del ingles con fluidez.  Sabemos que a veces es una adaptacion dificil, pero 30 anos de experiencia nos han mostrado que lo mas que los estudiantes son forzados a hablar en ingles, especialmente cuando a penas llegaron, lo mas facil es hacer la transicion.  Una vez que han pasado dos meses, dependiendo de como se ha envuelto en la cultura y la comunicacion en ingles, estos restricciones pueden ser evaluados de nuevo.

Social Outings

Exchange Students must follow the host family’s decisions on events or activities outside of the home, just as the host family’s own children must. In addition, they are not to associate with only other Exchange Students except on a limited basis. A normal adjustment time is about two months; should an unusual disconnect continue between the Exchange Student and the Host family, you should contact Deacon Doug Banks and have a conference over the concerns. But be patient;  time heals many things. Exchange Students need to be as actively involved as possible and immediately treated as members of the family, not visiting guests.

 Excursiones Socials

El estudiante debe de obedecer las decisiones de la familia huesped con respecto a los eventos o actividades fuera del hogar, las mismas expectativas que la familia huesped tiene para sus propios hijos.  Ademas de esto, el estudiante no debe de asociarse solamente con otros estudiantes de otros paises, con excepciones limitados.  Normalmente, el periodo de la adaptacion seran dos meses.  Si hay problemas entre el estudiante y la familia huesped que no sea normal, deben de hablar con el Diacono Banks y tener una conferencia sobre las preocupaciones.  Que sea pacientes; el paso de tiempo cura muchas cosas. El estudiante necesita ser envuelto lo mas que se pueda, e inmediatemente tratado asi como fuese un miembro de la familia, no un visitante.

 Homework and Schoolwork

The host family is not to give more or less attention to the Exchange Student with schoolwork than with it’s own children. The Exchange Student is responsible for going to the teacher or Deacon Banks to get additional help if needed academically. The Host family’s own son/daughter should help at first, but after a normal ‘break-in’ period, about two months, the Exchange Student should be independent and working the same as the other children, and taking ownership of their grades.

 La Tarea de la Escuela

La familia huesped no debe de prestar ni mas ni menos atencion a ayudar al estudiante con sus tareas de la escuela que a sus propios hijos.  El estudiante es responsable por ir con el maestro o el Diacono Banks para recibir ayuda academica, como sea necesario.  El hijo/la hija de la familia huesped debe ayudar al estudiante al principio, pero solo por el periodo de adaptacion, mas or menos de dos meses.  El estudiante debe de ser independiente y debe de trabajar igual a los otros ninos en la casa, y debe de tomar responsabilidad para sus calificaciones.

Visits from Home

Visits from Exchange families is not permitted unless prior approval has been discussed with school. Even Christmas and Easter, as special as they are, are not times to have visits from Exchange families.  In addition, Exchange Students are not to visit with their own families on vacations, either in their homeland or in the United States, unless this has been previously discussed with the school. 

Las Visitas de la Familia

Las visitas de las familias del estudiante de otro pais no son permitidos a menos que se ha recibido permiso de la escuela de anticipo.  Aun la Navidad y la Pascua, tan especiales como son, no son tiempos para visitas de la familia del estudiante.  Ademas de esto, el estudiante no debe de visitar a su familia en sus vacaciones, sea en su propio pais o en los Estados Unidos, a menos que esto se ha discutido con la escuela.

Spending Money

Exchange Students should not be spending more than what would be expected in the Host family’s own home, based on their own children’s activities and social life. Granted, if they are buying gifts for family members or souvenirs, these would be exceptions.  Exchange Students should be following the norm of the Host family and their expectations of their own children.

Gastar Dinero

El estudiante no debe de gastar mas de lo que hubiese sido esperado en el hogar de la familia huesped, basado en las actividades y vida social de sus propios hijos, con la excepcion de comprar regalos o recordatorios para su familia.  El estudiante debe de seguir la norma de la familia huesped y sus expectativas de sus propios hijos.

 Athletic and Fine Art Activities

Exchange Students are very welcome to participate in the school extra-curricular activities. They are provided at no cost, except for certain equipment that may be needed. Programs outside of the school are a decision that the Host family and the Exchange family need to discuss. The costs of these programs are the responsibility of the Exchange family, but the travel to get to them is a great concern for some Host families. This must not put an undue burden on the Host family, and the Host family has the final decision as to whether an Exchange Student can participate in these additional programs.

 Actividades de los Deportes y de las Bellas Artes

El estudiante esta bienvenido a participar en las actividades de la escuela mas alla del plan de estudios.  Son proveidas gratis, con la excepcion del equipo especial que sea necesario.  Los programas fuera de la escuela tienen que ver con una decision que la familia huesped y la familia del estudiante toman despues de una conversacion juntos.  Los gastos de estos programas son la responsabilidad de la familia del estudiante, pero el costo de viajar a ellos es una gran preocupacion para algunas familias huespedes.  No debe de ser una carga grande para la familia huesped, y la familia huesped toma la ultima decision con respecto a la participacion del estudiante en tales actividades extraordinarias.
